My SUPERHEROES soared through the day today! What an awesome way to support BRAVE Brooks!

Weekly Recap:
  • In Math, we  worked on describing the likelihood of an event, finding the difference between two numbers, and a little bit of elapsed time (a TRICKY 3rd grade skill!)
  • In Social Studies, we've been working on our map skills. Students used their knowledge of cardinal and intermediate directions to find locations around the room.
  • The kids had so much fun in writing this week brainstorming lists that we'll use to help us write stories.
  • In reading, we worked on using character traits to describe Jeremy from our story Those Shoes. We learned that Jeremy was DETERMINED and THOUGHTFUL. When we choose character traits, we have to able to support those traits with details from text! Students should ask themselves, 'How do I know that Jeremy is determined and thoughtful?"
  • It was also PAYDAY today! Students were so excited to receive their checks, sign them, and take them to the bank!

We made it through our first FULL week of third grade! The class is enjoying getting used to the third grade routine and so am I! In room 13 this week, you would have seen........
  • Habit 1: Be Proactive-- introduced and practiced. Students learned that when they take initiative and  responsibility for their actions and attitudes, they stand out as LEADERS!
  • The class blasting off into space! We had to use our knowledge of geography skills to locate our landing spot. Your child should be able to tell you what hemisphere, continent, country, city and state we live in.
  • Writing PERFECT paragraphs that include a topic sentence, at least 3 detail sentences, and a conclusion sentence.
  • Students practicing making good predictions about our reading story, "Those Shoes." We use the title, illustrations, and details from the text to predict what's going to happen next.
  • Our first problem solving day in math! We learned the first two steps of our problem solving process and practiced with our partner. We'll learn step 3 next week. Watch below to begin learning about how we problem solve in third grade!

Introducing Mrs. Hreno's FABULOUS Third Grade Class....

We did it! We  made it through our first week of third grade. It was such a busy, fun-filled week. I'm wondering if your child came home as exhausted as their teacher?! We had a blast learning the third grade basics, making new friends, and gearing up for what's ahead this year. Take a peek at some of the activities we did this week!

We read the book Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun about a little girl who has the courage to  make the right choices and remain who she is, even though a classmate continues to tease her. At the end of the book, the little girl ends up becoming friends with the same classmate who was giving her trouble. We LOVED this book! After reading, each student was partnered up with a classmate they didn't know very well and completed a getting to know you activity. Ask your child who their new friend is and what they learned about them!
We brainstormed the qualities of a great classmate!  We discussed what a great classmate is, isn't, says, and does to be a good friend!
Making minions to hang on our outside bulletin board! You'll see these guys at Meet the Teacher!
